So a few Sundays ago, it had been raining and we get a call about an accident with injuries. They were saying one vehicle rolled over and someone was trapped inside. Another Officer and I were just a little ways away, so we fly over and start getting things taken care of. A SUV had stopped waiting for traffic to clear to make a left turn. It got rear ended by a van that then spun in the oncoming lane and then got hit by another car. The SUV got pushed off the side of the road and rolled over. The driver was still inside, but his wife and two sons got out.
The other Officer was dealing with the van and other car, so I headed over to the SUV. I was trying to ask the wife some questions while the medics talked to her husband and worked on getting him out. She was yelling at the medics that they needed to get the Jaws of Life. She got mad at me for asking her questions and walked around the SUV. While she was storming off, the medics determined that the husband did not have any serious injuries and could walk to the rear window of the SUV and climb out. She made it around to the rear and then began yelling at the medics that they were not doing their jobs because her husband was walking out the back "on his own." Then she turns to me and asks me what happened. During all this, one of the sons is most concerned with getting the golf clubs out of the back and getting them all back in the bag. The wife is yelling at everyone the whole time.
The medics are checking everyone out and several people are needing to be transported to the hospital and they are trying to figure out how to get everyone there. The wife is on the phone with who I assume is 911 dispatch yelling that they did not send enough ambulances after she told them a lot were needed. The medics get back to checking her husband out. While they are checking him out she begins snapping at the medics about when someone is going to get something for her shoulder, "like a sling or something." The first thing the medic does is tell her it would probably be a good idea to take the big heavy purse off the shoulder she is complaining about.
During all of this the news media shows up and is taking video for the news. Most everyone had been loaded into the ambulances and she was the only one still outside. She calls me over and tells me I have to tell the media to leave. When I explain they have a right to be there, she says to me it is "exploitation of human suffering." By this point I have gotten tired of her continual griping and yelling. It was all I could do to tell her I did not see any suffering humans around they could be exploiting, but I held my tongue. I had to walk away at that point and busied myself with getting things taken care of to clean up the mess.
